Transocean safety Bonuses ?!?

by admin

In a move that redefines corporate greed and unmasks their contempt for the people of the gulf coast at a time when they are begging to start drilling again, Transocean executive pay committee has awarded bonuses of almost 1 million dollars to five of their top executives due to 2010 being the “best year in safety performance in our company’s history.” Now I don’t know where you work, but when a rig blows up killing 11 people, 9 of which work for Transocean, then that is not a good safety year. That doesn’t account for also destroying the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people and killing untold wild life. Apparently these bright and promising executives were paid almost 20 million for the great job they did in 2010, including almost 3 million in special retention bonusues to make sure they stayed with the company. Because, you know, every oil company in the world wants these knuckleheads running the show,so we don’t want to lose them. I know we need the jobs that drilling provides in South Louisiana, but our you sure any jobs are worth the danger of letting these people drill in our backyard again ?

How can BP make it right?

by admin

Making it Right: What can BP do?
There are so many people that watched in horror for the weeks that the Gulf Coast disaster went on in 2010. It was so painful to watch a beautiful part of our country basically get destroyed right before our eyes. The worst part of this was it wasn’t like a hurricane or an earthquake which comes in and leave, it was something that was slow and painful to watch, and unfortunately, it was something that could have been prevented had everything been done more carefully. The people of the Gulf coast will have to deal with how this has affected their lives for years to come and will see the far reaching effects bog them down.
There have been steps made by BP to right the situation. One of the first things that they did was set up an emergency relief fund and a settlement fund so that they could help people get through this time. In this fund, there is nearly 20 billion dollars that can be shelled out to people that lost income because of this. However, this is just one step in what needs to be done on behalf of BP to make sure that the people of the Gulf Coast are well taken care of and that the people of the United States never have to experience this again.
The one key word that was missed before this whole crisis was prevention. Prevention needs to be established. BP should have minimum regulations for all of their equipment, they should have a system set up in the case of an emergency like this, and they should be prepared if they are going to do offseas drilling for all of the issues that can happen with it. Had there been more prevention, this may not have been such an issue. There also should be a crisis management team that is constantly looking for solutions to solve issues that could arrive.
For the people on the Gulf Coast, BP needs to be a part of their lives for a long time to come. They should be involved in community activities to better the area. They need to stay long beyond the time that they are there to dole out dollars and be sure that this area is able to rebuild. There should be stations that BP houses that are there to help with issues that arrive and be sure that this area functions as normal as possible.

Long term effect of BP Oil Spill On the Gulf Coast

by admin

The Long Term Effects on the Gulf Coast
Any disaster messes with the ecosystem in ways that we will never understand. We’ve seen natural disasters destroy cities and habitats, we’ve seen oil spills ruin economic livelihoods like fishing, and we’ve seen pollution kill the things around us. To us, we watch our world deteriorate on a daily basis, but we hope that some way we can stop it and reverse it. The Gulf Coast oil leak showed us a lot of different things, it showed us the vulnerability that we have when things are not done properly, it showed us how quickly a fragile ecosystem may be destroyed, and it showed us how quickly that may affect people’s lives and how they earn their livings.
The problem with the BP issue on the Gulf coast is that it affected many different industries. There were places that were completely shut down, fisheries that are closed, shrimpers that can’t operate anymore, and oyster farms that are no more. This didn’t just affect one or two things, it had a far reaching impact that lead to more than just an industry that depended on the ecosystem, and it had affects like decreasing a huge tourist industry that lost out on guest after guest. It really put a damper on the way people made their money and how they lived their lives, and even more so, they will be dealing with the effects of this for years.
Scientists say that it will take years for the Gulf coast to return to where it was, if it even does. There are places that have had serious oil spills and have never quite recovered from what happen to their ecosystem. Unfortunately, the Gulf cost is probably in that boat. In terms of the fisheries and the other industries that depended on the sea, they will slowly return, but they may never return to the level that they were once at. The tourism will be far likely to come back quicker because that doesn’t rely so much on one facet of the area, and there is a lot more that people can do there.
It is important to understand that the Gulf coast will never be the same, and we should never expect it to return to the same level. However, hopefully, with the right assistance, it will be able to be the beautiful and plentiful place that it once was, and allow its citizens to live off of the land like they did.

Denied by the Gulf Coast Claims Facility?

by admin

What Happens if You’re Denied by the Gulf Coast Claims Facility?
For a lot of people they dreaded the day that they would receive the letter showing that they were declined for their assistance and emergency aid by the Gulf Coast Claims Facility. Yes, it did happen, and there were a lot of people that were denied their claim and had nowhere to go and no one to turn to. However, for people that were denied by the Gulf Coast Claim Facility, they do have options and they do have other organizations that they can turn to. People don’t have to struggle on their own, especially in the face of a disaster like this; there are things that can be done.
For people that were denied, the first thing that they can do is file an appeal. If they truly believe that they are entitled to funds from the Gulf Coast Claim Facility gather paperwork and write a letter of appeal, it may help. At this point, hiring an attorney may be the right thing to do because it will help them get their facts across and make sure that they have someone that is fighting in their corner. Sometimes, as an individual, there is only so much that you can do.
Otherwise, if your claim with the Gulf Coast Claim Facility is a wash, there are other places that you can look for aid. The easiest place to start is probably your state assistance office, see if you can qualify for any state aid programs. There are programs like unemployment that will help you get money if you are out of work, and it will last for many weeks. You also can apply for aid for help with insurance, which would be Medicaid, or see if you can get your children on state sponsored and funded insurance programs. You should also look into state assistance for food such as food stamps and other programs like that where you may be able to qualify in lieu of your recent situation.
Even though the Gulf Coast Claims Facility may decline you, there are other places that you can go to get done what you need. Knowing what other options are available for you will help you figure out what other choices that you may have and where you can look. There are a lot of great state programs that were created to help people that are in bad situations, know what those are and how they can help you.

Fairness and the Gulf Coast Claims Facility

by admin

Is the Approach with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility Good Enough?
There are a lot of people that are skeptical of what the Gulf Coast Claims Facility has done, and a lot of people that have reason to be skeptical. For many people, their livelihoods depended on the land and the sea that was there and with its fragile ecosystem destroyed, they have lost a lot of ability to make the money that they need to survive. Even worse, now they are reliant on a government organization that they are hoping can help them get through the hard times and make their life enjoyable.
There really isn’t anyone that can say if the results of what is happening with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility are good enough except those that have to deal with it on a daily basis. But, most of those people will probably tell you that they are frustrated, that they are still struggling, and that they don’t know what they are going to do. For these people, the solution isn’t enough. Sure, there is a short term emergency option that will give them up to 6 months payment, but that amounted to on the average $3200, which isn’t much for people that potentially have lost their source of income.
For others, there is a settlement that will be determined down the line. This settlement is something that is going to take awhile to be given a final answer. Plus, once the settlement is accepted, that is it; there is no way to fight it. So, if they want to get their money, they are going to have to accept what the company has to offer to them. Unfortunately, without some arbitration and a good attorney, they may not get what they need or what they deserve. The other issue with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility is that the claim can represent what they are going to potentially lose for 3 years, as a fisherman, how do you show a loss like that?
Unfortunately, the work that has been done by the Gulf Coast Claims Facility isn’t quite enough to get the people suffering in the Gulf Coast where they need to be. As the Gulf Coast rebuilds, these people will have to deal with what they are given and will have to struggle. Hopefully, the Gulf Coast Claims Facility will be able to positively impact these people’s lives and help them move on with their lives and return to normalcy.

Tough times on Gulf Coast

by admin

Hardship on the Gulf Coast
With the holidays approaching, there are many people on the Gulf coast that are wondering what they are going to do. It is always harder to be dealing with something during the times where Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holidays are approaching. Especially when there are children involved, it can be extremely difficult to not be able to give them what they want under the Christmas tree, or explain to them that their won’t be presents this year. It is important that the United States understands the hardship that people in the Gulf are dealing with and that we as Americans try to do something to help better their situation.
The problem with the crisis in the Gulf coast is that it is something that cannot be fixed quickly. For many of people that are hurting this holiday season, their livelihoods are based on a certain season, which is generally the summer and fall, and the problem is that their season is over. With their season over, they’ve lost the ability to make their money and it is a season that they have to put behind them and can never get back. For other people, the lack of work in the summer months and the oil spill prevented tourists from coming to the area and those people that were servers and bartenders or did day cruises and fishing trips are out of luck.
What was created to help people was an emergency relief fund through the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, however that money generally came in one lump sum payment and the average was $3200. For a family that is behind on bills, that is hardly a month or two of what their income may have been, and a fishing season can bring in a lot of money. So, the relief is helpful, but for most families, it is barely enough to keep their heads above water. So, even though the money is there, it is something that they have to use to pay off the bare necessities and they are left with nothing else left over.
With the holidays approaching quickly, there are many people that are left in the Gulf hoping and praying. They are trying to figure out how to put food on the table, keep the electric on, and ensure that their family members have happy holidays. All this, while dealing with a crisis that may affect their livelihoods for many years to come.

What has the GCCF accomplished so far?

by admin

Accomplishments of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility
When it comes to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, there are a lot of people out there that want to know what has been done and what has been accomplished. Holding a government organization like the Gulf Coast Claims Facility accountable for what they have accomplished is important. The people want to police and be sure that the results that they need will be met and that they will get the benefits that they were told of. Knowing what has been done and what is yet to be done will help people step up and contact people if they see that there is an issue.
The head of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility is Kenneth Feinberg, it is his job to administer and release the 20 billion dollar compensation fund that BP was required to put forward. Mr. Feinberg is actually a master at this sort of thing, he is the same guy that was appointed to help with families who had loved ones killed in the September 11th attacks, Veterans affected by Agent Orange, and women killed by the defective birth control device from Dalkon Shield. He has attempted to create a fair and quick way to disburse the funds and get people the money that they need. Mr. Feinberg has worked hard to create two ways to get money, an emergency option which provides some money up front and a final settlement option that will be a larger lump sum. With the emergency money, it is easy to determine claims and a lot of those have already been paid out.
The final payment is what is going to be more difficult. With the final payments, people will have three years to estimate their damages and their losses. But, once they take a payment that is it, they cannot file an appeal. The biggest downside to what Mr. Feinberg has created is that the final payments are basically going to be a disaster to compute. It is really hard to determine how much a fisherman will be affected or how much their total income really did decrease. This is the one downside and the issue, there may be a lot of appeals or these decisions may be drawn out for a long time. Mr. Fienberg may want to see if there are better ways to come about the final decision so that people can move on with their lives.
