Three boats deployed 9,000 feet of boom at the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet in St. Bernard Parish Monday in an effort to prevent oil from the Gulf of Mexico leak from flowing into fragile parish wetlands and marshes.
Meanwhile, oil reponse training classes for St. Bernard Parish residents will continue this week. The classes are scheduled each day at 7:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Frederick J. Sigur Civic Auditorium Grand Ballroom, 8245 W. Judge Perez Drive in Chalmette.
The classes in St. Bernard Parish are only open to parish residents. The classes are a requirement of BP’s “vessels of opportunity” program in which commercial fishermen are used to help fight the leak. There is limited seating of 200 for each class, and arrivals to the classes will be accommodated on a first come first serve basis.
Also, Catholic Charities has opened a satellite operations facility at the St. Bernard Catholic Church at 2805 Bayou Road. Representatives will offer case management and crisis counseling. The services will be available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
